Read, Watch & Blog: The Worst Witch

This started as a movie for me in the late 80s/early 90s. I had no clue it was a book series. So when I found out I had to get them. I was reminded of the movie when I saw Netflix made a new series.

It took me roughly 2 days to read all 7 books! Gah they were so fun! I wish I would have read them as a kid. But at least I’ve read them now. For a middle grade series it was perfect! Just enough to engage a child but not so much to overwhelm them. The characters were fun! I found myself getting so angry at Enid Hallow that I had to put the book down and do something else for a little while 🀣. Of course the adult in me saw the holes that could have been filled and the want for more background info on Mildred and other characters but I kept telling myself this isn’t a YA or Adult series. Middle grade is always a guilty pleasure read. I can just sit back and enjoy the stories without having to remember a great deal of previous info.

I enjoyed all the characters. Even the horrible snotty ones. I was able to picture what they looked like and how the castle looked.

I gave each book a 5/5 🌟. So it’s a 5/5 🌟 for the entire series as well.

Next I watched the movie. I haven’t seen it in probably 20 years. I forgot Tim Curry was in it πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ. While I still enjoyed the movie for what it was I was sad to see how much they left out. The movie was only 1 hour and 10 mins long. They left out a main character and an entire plot! I mean book on is less than 100 pages. They could have added in everything from the book and it still would have been less than a 2 hour movie. I give this about 3/5 🌟 only because it brought back childhood memories!

Next up I watched the new TV series on Netflix. Omg I LOVED it! They did change a few things but it followed way more closely to the books than the movie did. They even added some extra background info into the series which I would have loved in the books. I was so pleased to see the actress who plays Layanna Mormont in Game of Thrones is Mildred Hubble! And the actress who plays Baxter in Downton Abbey is Mrs, Hardbroom! This was such a fun series! Amazing cast. It was well developed. I’m hoping they keep going with the series to follow along with each book. 🀞🏻🀞🏻 fingers crossed! 5/5 🌟 for sure!!!

I hope this convinced you to read the books or at least watch the series on Netflix! It’s great to watch as an adult, a kid or with your family!

  1. I was a late 80’s early 90’s middle grade reader and I do not remember this movie or the books at all. I have seen it on Netflix and I showed it too my daughter, but I think she’s a little too old now because she wasn’t interested.
