Starting in 1976, February officially became Black History Month in the United States. It was always my favorite month at school. Yes a white girl excited about Black History. I hate what happened to them and the struggles they went, and are still going through, but I’ve always been fascinated about their history. It’s not enough though. Schools are not doing a very good job at it. The most we learned about what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and about the freeing of the slaves. I’m ashamed to say that it was not until the movie Hidden Figures was coming out that I even knew about these amazing Afrian-American ladies. We never learned about them in school when we were on the subject of space and the NASA program. So I now try to collect as many books as I can about their history, both the good and the bad, and educate myself as much as possible. I want to try to take some classes during my senior year of college on African-American history. So below I’m going to tell you about some books that I do own that are fiction with a POC as the main character, non-fiction and historical fiction books that I want to get to in 2017. If I put a (*) next to it that means I plan to read it during the month of February.
* This will be a MUST read for February
*must read in february
Goodreads Summary I got to meet this author for a class project for my English Comp class back in 2014. This is based on the actually events that happened in the 1920s in Tulsa, Oklahoma. something you won’t even learn about in the history books. It was a horrible time for the African-American community. Google the Tulsa Riots 1920s and read about it.
*Must read for February
Goodreads Summary The Underground Railroad system and Harriet Tubman is what got me on my path of African-American History. I’m excite to read this and have heard nothing but amazing things about it.
If I still have time after my other reads I’ll squeeze this one into my February reads
Goodreads Summary I got this at a garage sale for less than a dollar. Its my only non-fiction book.
I’ve seen this movie and LOVED it! I’ve been told the book was even better. So found this at Goodwill not too long ago! SCORE!
I saw some middle grade books that are POC main characters on Richards Book Nook Booktube channel that I want to check out very soon as well. If you have any recommendations for books, non-fiction, fiction, historical fiction, please let me know. Thanks!!
