A Conjuring of Light (Shades of Magic #3) by V.E. Schwab review (small spoilers)

Witness the fate of beloved heroes – and enemies.

THE BALANCE OF POWER HAS FINALLY TIPPED…
The precarious equilibrium among four Londons has reached its breaking point. Once brimming with the red vivacity of magic, darkness casts a shadow over the Maresh Empire, leaving a space for another London to rise.

WHO WILL CRUMBLE?
Kell – once assumed to be the last surviving Antari – begins to waver under the pressure of competing loyalties. And in the wake of tragedy, can Arnes survive?

WHO WILL RISE?
Lila Bard, once a commonplace – but never common – thief, has survived and flourished through a series of magical trials. But now she must learn to control the magic, before it bleeds her dry. Meanwhile, the disgraced Captain Alucard Emery of the Night Spire collects his crew, attempting a race against time to acquire the impossible.

WHO WILL TAKE CONTROL?
And an ancient enemy returns to claim a crown while a fallen hero tries to save a world in decay.

Oh where to even begin. This book was published in 2017 and I have been putting it off all this time because I was scared and sad to see this trilogy end. I first started this series when A Darker Shade of Magic came out in 2015. I got the book in the first OwlCrate box that was sent out. I was immediately hooked. It was my first Schwab book and she quickly rose to one of my favorite authors of all times. Come to think of it she might have even got me hooked on fantasy in general 🤔.

First off the world building was still amazing as ever! I felt like I was there. Like I was going on the adventures with them. I did not have a problem being able to visualize the places they went.

Oh Kell 😍 still the mysterious man of my dreams. I really wish we could have more back story on him. Even a novella would work. I was sad when he burned the paper that had his history on it. I get it. He had a family that raised him but ugh…I need more on Kell.

Rhy…the golden boy. Not sure how I feel about him. I don’t hate him but don’t love him like I do Kell. I almost just feel sorry for him. My heart did break for him towards the end of the book. I felt his pain. But he stood strong and did what he was suppose to do as a Prince and eventually a King.

Lila Bard, oh what to say about Lila Bard 🙄 She was a well written charactrt but she DROVE me insane. I don’t know how many times I wanted to reach through the book and smack her. I get the whole independent woman thing but my lord she was so hard headed. Oh gosh, I just realized she reminds me a little of myself, only I’m not a pirate (but would like to be one 😂😋). I just hope I’m not as annoying as she is.

Alucard Emery. Oh I love this Captain. I would totally be on his pirate ship. He has such a sad backstory. I want to just hug him. My heart just melted with happiness for him at the end of the book. He deserved to be happy. I just wish we could have had more Rhy and Alucard time.

Holland, poor Holland. I know most people probably hate him. Think of him as a villain but I absolutely LOVE him. I see why he did what he did. Honestly I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same to save my own world. Maybe he didn’t know it would get that bad. I mean come on, after dealing with the Dane twins do you think it could have been worse than that? My heart broke at the end. I cried, I mourned 🥺

Overall this trilogy was absolutely AMAZING and I highly recommend it if you love fantasy.
