Heartless by Marissa Meyer review

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland and a favorite of the unmarried King, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, she wants to open a shop and create delecatable pasteries. But for her mother, such a goal is unthinkable  for a women who could be a queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the King’s marriage proposal, she meets handsome and mysterious Jest. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into a secret courtship.

Cath is determined to choose her own destiny. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.”

This was one of my most highly anticipated reads of 2016. I absolutely LOVE her series, The Lunar Chronicles. But his is totally different. You can’t even compare it to her series. I read a few comments on Goodreads about this book and people were not finishing it because it was boring, wasn’t like TLC (well duh, it’s it’s own book 🙄), it’s not a retelling, it’s too much like Alice in Wonderland. Well let’s sit down and talk for a min. This isn’t a retelling like TLC. This is an origin story. I really don’t like that it’s even in the retelling catergory. This is the Queen’s story. On how her life was before she ascended the thrown and now she became the evil, hateful Queen of Hearts that she is. So it would be kind of stupid if Marissa changed everything about Wonderland 🙄 So please don’t let those kind of comments hinder you from trying this book!! Ok so now on to my thoughts….

This book was so magical and whimsical. With the fact that she left Wonderland exactly like Wonderland I could picture everything happening as I read the book. I did not see the twist coming with Jest and Hatta. Yes it was a slow read but it wasn’t suppose to be dark from the get go. The Queen wasn’t always a horrible person. I truly enjoyed his book and I am so glad Marissa Meyer wrote it. Now I really really really wish the Queen would have chopped her parents heads off too (that’s all I’ll say 😂😂😂). I could not stand them! Ugh

  1. I’ve been seeing this book around Instagram and your review really made me want to read it! I love origin stories. Did you ever read anything by Gregory McGuire? I love Wicked and the story of how she came to be green and “wicked”.
